What Is A Limit Order?
A limit order is a type of order placed by a trader on a trading platform, including both centralized and decentralized exchanges. It is used to specify the desired price at which a trade should be executed. Unlike market orders that are executed immediately at the current market price, a limit order allows traders to set a specific price at which they are willing to buy or sell an asset.
When placing a limit order to buy, the trader sets the maximum price they are willing to pay for the asset. If the market price reaches or falls below the specified limit price, the order will be executed. On the other hand, when placing a limit order to sell, the trader sets the minimum price at which they are willing to sell their asset. If the market price reaches or exceeds the specified limit price, the order will be executed.
Limit orders provide traders with more control over their trades and allow them to specify the exact price at which they want to buy or sell an asset. This can be particularly useful in volatile markets or when traders want to enter or exit positions at specific price levels. However, it’s important to note that there is a possibility that a limit order may not be filled if the market price does not reach the specified limit price.
It’s worth mentioning that while limit orders are commonly used on centralized exchanges, they may not be available or operate in the same way on all decentralized exchanges (DEXes), as the functionality can vary depending on the specific DEX and its design.
